A day of veterans helping veterans is set for 1 to 6 p.m. July 28 at Delaware Veterans Post 2, 720 Pear St., Dover.
The fundraiser will include live entertainment by Wall Of Cain, Trini, Social Ruins and Common Courtesy, along with food and camaraderie.
Tom Walls, son of Vietnam veteran Bill Walls of Kent County Chapter 850, Vietnam Veterans of America, went to an emergency room in March with a problem breathing. Diagnosed with a lung infection, he was airlifted to Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, Maryland, then to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore as the infection spread to his brain and caused organ failures. Doctors estimated his chance of survival at only 10 percent.
Four months later, he is in a rehab facility in Maryland and has made progress, but the bills are overwhelming, according to his family, who are trying to help him keep his home.
“The family is very grateful for all those who have stepped forward to help. A welder by trade, Tom is a proud member of the local union 602 and is looking forward to coming back to work after his recovery,” said sister Kim Sammak.
She and sister Tammie Walls-Lavender are Delaware nurses.
“Veterans have a habit of sticking together, especially Vietnam vets,” said Joe Startt Jr., chapter president. “The special circumstances of this case touched our hearts, and we encourage our fellow veterans of all generations and the public to come out to help.”
Tickets are $20 and can be paid at the door. There will be a cash bar, 50/50 and a silent auction. Proceeds benefit the Tom Walls Foundation.
