CHICOPEE — Recognizing that Vietnam War veterans never received the respect and appreciation they deserved, city officials are joining with multiple other organizations to honor those who fought in arguably the country’s most controversial war.
The Chicopee event will coincide with National Vietnam War Veterans Day, which falls on March 29. The city’s first event to honor the day will begin at 3:30 p.m. at the RiverMills Center, said Stephanie Shaw, director of the city Department of Veterans Services.
At about 4 p.m. there will be a speaking program featuring Al Picard, who is a veteran and the president of the Friends of the RiverMills Center, and Delfo Barabani, of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 111. A representative from Westover Air Reserve Base and local politicians will also bring greetings, she said.
